Hidden Cost of Getting Beach Body Ready

Preparing to look good on the beach costs many women more than double the price of an actual break abroad.

Shelling out on beauty treatments and products before a summer getaway can soar to over £400, according to a study for Debenhams. This compares with a week-long package holiday in Turkey currently costs just £215 with leading tour operators.*

Over two thirds of women confessed to visiting their hairdresser in preparation for their summer vacation while more than half (56%) indulged in either a professional spray tanning session or a home treatment.  A similar number (46%) would not dream of going on holiday without a waxing session.

Four in ten said they had a manicure and a further 22% a pedicure to ensure they looked their best by the poolside. Some 18% had their eyebrows tinted and shaped; just under one in six (15%) had a facial and 8% went in for a full-body pampering such as exfoliation, skin moisturising and massages.

The average spent on pre-holiday treatments was £197 according to the online survey of women shoppers, but 7% said they spent more than £400.

Keeping standards up while away sent the beauty bill soaring further with an average £86 spent on make-up, cleaner and moisturiser, hair protector, sun cream, self-tanning lotion and other products purchased specially for the holiday.

Debenhams Beauty Club spokesperson, Christine Morgan, said: “We see demand for treatments soar in the weeks before the summer holidays as everyone wants to look their best on this much anticipated week or two away.

“For many women it’s not just about finding the right outfits, it’s more about not compromising on doing whatever it takes to make them feel at their most body-confident. For many of us a summer holiday abroad is where more of our body is on show than usual, either in a swimming costume by a pool, the beach, or in hot weather clothing, so it is not surprising that we want the bits of us that are revealed to look in the best shape possible.”

Preparation for the holiday begins three weeks before with a visit to the hairdresser while a wax and  spray tanning session is often left to the last minute. Time spent getting ready can top nine hours.

Summer beauty buying creates a sales halo for the category with shoppers spending much more on holiday preparation than their usual beauty regime. Debenhams Beauty Club members benefit from accumulating additional loyalty points on their purchases to offset the cost of the next beauty indulgence, Christmas as well as benefiting from free makeover and skincare consultations.

Surprisingly 11% of those surveyed confessed to topping up their tan on their return to the UK to make sure family and friends knew they had enjoyed themselves .

Christine added: “After making the effort to be as prepared as possible for our summer break, many women are happy to indulge in a little post-holiday “cheating” with either a professional spray-tan, or purchasing self-tanning products to apply themselves to maintain that hard-won holiday glow for as long as possible.”
