WEDDING MARCH OF WOE

Your wedding is supposed to be the best day of your life, but for many it is the most anxious one too. For an extraordinary one in eight Brits (12%) the biggest fear is that their partner won’t turn up at all.

A new survey for Debenhams Wedding Insurance reveals couples about to marry are plagued by worries including being jilted at the altar, the dress being ruined, the groom losing the rings, or the venue going bust.

The top dread for people before they tie-the-knot is rows between family members, with more than a third (35%) concerned that arguments and bickering could cast a shadow on their big day. Worries about the venue, caterers, and their other wedding suppliers going bust, or just not turning up, will also keep almost a third (32%) of couples awake the night before they say “I do”.

Making a speech is a huge cause of anxiety for almost one in five (18%), with many more brides now expected to say a few words at a wedding, in addition to the groom and best man.  And fearing the worst, more than 1 on 5 (21%) of brides-to-be raised questions with their future spouse over the potential for embarrassment of a too-near-the-knuckle best man’s speech.

Unsurprisingly more men (18%) feared losing the wedding rings than women did (6%), whilst women were more anxious about their wedding outfit being ruined than men were (11% v 4%). However despite these minor gender differences, the majority of pre-wedding jitters were shared by both bride and groom (72% and 70%).

When it comes to the bottom line couples worried equally about the final cost – which is not surprising as the average wedding in the UK is reported to result in a bill of over £18,000.

Debenhams Head of Personal Finance, Mike Hazell explained: “These are turbulent times both in terms of the weather and the economy, and as a result more people are realising the importance of taking out special insurance policies to protect what should be the happiest day of their lives. That way they can ensure that they at least get their money back if the worst does happen.

“Although major wedding disasters are rare, even with the best planning sometimes things can and do go wrong – hence why we offer Debenhams Wedding Insurance, so couples can enjoy their special day without any unnecessary worries.”
